Everything burnt… his sister’s sacrifice had been for nothing, her magic not sufficient to stop the creature. She’d known it, told him as much. He hadn’t believed it. But he kept hearing her screams; they almost caused him to reveal himself, even though she’d ordered him to flee. “Learn,” she’d said. “Everything you can about him, his story, his weakness.” There was a hidden place where the rulers of the kingdom had gathered knowledge about the dragon, a library only the heir knew about. His sister revealed its location; he was their only chance. So he’d bided his time. He did what Alienor asked: he learned. Magic, stories, war… he travelled to hear other legends about the beast. And now he stood in the dragon’s lair; what was once his father’s castle. Through the secret passageways he’d entered. The creature hoarded a treasure bigger than it could ever need. Such was its nature. Amid the sapphire, emerald and glittering pearl eggs in the nest lay a smaller dull grey egg. He

It all started with the trees. Well, really, it began decades before but people only took notice then. No one expected it, or imagined it could happen. After all, nature wasn’t supposed to have a consciousness. So no one was prepared for the day the trees left. Some said they were actually destroyed. That was however part of a crusade from - ironically - the two extremes of the political spectrum. Interestingly both groups argue the trees were voluntarily destroyed. By those holding the power of technology in their hands. They just didn’t agree on the why. To those knowing the truth… well, had we been human we might have cried. Nature was conscious, and took note of everything that passed. The trees were just the first suspension of men’s privileges to live on earth, even though most ignored it. Everyone knew trees and plants in general created oxygen through photosynthesis; but the trees disappearing didn’t ring any alarm. Mankind were more interested in a theoretical fight

She felt the movement beside her before she saw anything. Of course, it was dark here, darker than anywhere else she’d ever been. Her eyes weren’t made for this. Four days… What if he didn’t find the answer? What would they do? Should they leave the only home they’d known? The Seven Valleys were rich; at least until now. The frozen rivers yielded no fish, the snowed in woods no berries or mushrooms. Should they search for the herds, as they once did? Few animals had come out of hibernation, although they couldn’t last much longer

She looked at the apple on her desk; if she hadn’t known better she would have sworn it gave off a slightly rotten smell. Maybe the almost real feel of the golden fruit was what gave it its name. Eris always meant to create chaos and discord; golden or not, the apple would have been rotten.
She didn’t really care; the apple was being exchanged for a necklace one of her clients paid a fortune to get. That money would allow Dahlia to finally buy her parents’ house back for them. The financial crash had destroyed what small savings they had and they found themselves renting the place they once owned. Unacceptable for Dahlia.

She'd captured his attention in a way no other ever had. Her lips, pursed in a lovely pout of concentration were as enticing as her ocean blue eyes. Her dark brown curls curtained most of her face but he knew its every line by now. He hesitated; there was a time he would have approached her without the slightest remorse, would have flirted and coaxed until she did everything he wanted. Today, he felt shy. Still when she left the library, picking up a couple of books - he chuckled at the well known subject - he followed her. He wanted - no needed - to speak to her. She stopped once, glancing behind her, as if she knew he followed. He could see the concern in her face. She was sensitive; most wouldn’t have seen anyone behind them and just shaken the feeling; but obviously she didn’t. She shrugged, rolled her shoulders, as if she’d experienced before. Well he’d been following her a while now; not stalking, he wasn’t stalking her. She moved on, crossing to the other side and moving

There was unrest in the village; he felt it the moment he entered the place. His trade required he knew how to read a crowd; an important quality for a musician. And he could feel the unease. See it too. People were slithering along the walls avoiding the crosswalks and the street. Fear was palpable, the atmosphere heavy with it, as if it were a living thing. He went to his usual inn, only to find it empty. A curious thing; most villagers would be having a pint at that time; but the innkeeper seemed even too distressed to welcome him. Seemed not to want to take him in. But Lochlan wasn’t going farther tonight; he was too tired. The innkeeper still didn’t say a word, only gave him a key and disappeared again without even offering dinner or a drink. Lochlan took a candle in its holder and went up the stairs to the room he was given. What was going on? He rubbed his face, attempting to chase the exhaustion away. In vain. He would sleep and figure it out tomorrow. Herthford was usually a

She was beautiful; he’d always said so, but he'd never paid attention to all the details that made her beautiful until she lay asleep in his bed.
The fact she was a red head was obvious and even the least observant of men would have admitted that her hair colour was fascinating, hesitating between a copper shade in the sun and more auburn in the fall or winter.
She also had eyes that changed colours depending on the light; that was the thing that caught his attention when he met her. Her eyes. They were blue when she laughed but green in the sun and they turned almost grey when she was angry. Who could have known eyes changed colours

She heard the steps upon the front porch before her mother.

She grabbed the arms of the chair; she always loved how her skin espoused the carvings. She could describe the birds and leaves on the wood just from the touch on her hands. She loved the touch of wood: it grounded her in reality and it also allowed her to travel in the most unusual way. She wou

Lisa pulled on her clothes, as was her habit whenever she entered the classroom. Some might even think she was afraid of losing them. Holding onto her sweater, she took a seat not too far that she might hear the professor, but not too close that they might not notice her.
Unfortunately this day, it appeared the teacher was certain to take note of her. She kept her head down taking notes, as he spoke at length about Roe vs. Wade and its importance in the legal framework for women to be in control of their bodies. He also showed why it remained such a hot issue and why it was contested every so often. And then he called her out.

There was only one man to find and dispatch. But what man is so unwilling to die that he requires a company of fifty to kill? He swallowed uneasily. The weapons the Council trusted each member of the company were for cowards. Bleeding arrows.
“The only trusted way to destroy him. He must be left with no blood.”
Frenel wasn’t a man of magic; he was a soldier, a man of war, but he’d seen the destructive power of the bleeding arrows in a fight. It wasn

The creature looked dubiously at the disc in its hands; what could it mean? It placed the disc within the box that had protected it so far and in its satchel to be shown to the scientist on board the ship before moving forward. The planet they were orbiting around now was once rich; they’d already identified numerous layers in the earth’s crust and found it was once made of 70% of water. There were traces of civilization albeit of the most primitive sort. Maybe the disc would tell them something.
Standing tall on its hind legs the creature cast a glance around; the air was dry, clean although it wasn’t always so. Something

There were pools of blood in the courtyard; many had died so that one might be saved. Well two rather, but one didn’t count as much as the other. In the mud lay two gigantic men, each in their own way: one in strength and courage, the other in power and magic. What would History say about them? Both sought glory and immortality in their own way. What were left were shattered bones and broken limbs. Neither would survive, neither could save themselves. And as they passed, they brought with them an age that no men would be able to repeat, unless the one who mattered held powers.

Character Development Sheet 01
This is a character development sheet. It's used to help think outside the box for character creation. When making a character you want the character to be as real to your audience as the character is to you.
To use this character development sheet, save it on your computer, but leave the author information for the sheet at the bottom. You might need it to find my website to see if I have anything new for you to use. Fill it out for each main character you write about. Then save the filled out sheets in a folder so you can refer to them as needed.
Not all of the information you'll put in the development sheet will be known to your audience,

Worlds End Credits [FFM2021 #16]
Your friends and family were gone. They'd been mauled, murdered, and reduced into invaluable shells of people you still loved. You didn't get to say goodbye — only scream hoarsely and sob as you rushed to find a means of escape. Nobody knew what caused this. Whether it was extraterrestrial life or just a globally lethal mixture of catastrophes, everything was ending. Flash floods, tornadoes, heat strokes, everything one could imagine was hitting the Earth all at once and nobody seemed to cover it quick enough before a tragedy struck them. In a less severe scenario, you would be seen as one of the luckier ones — though it was anything but fortunate. You gripped your steering wheel tightly, foot slammed onto the gas pedal. You didn't know what was going on. People were losing their fucking minds. Gunshots blasted in the air, the incoherent screams of both the madmen and the innocent finally cracking, all wondering why. Why did it have to come to this? What could any of us do? Nearby

The Mythical World Above Water
Legend tells that long ago, the world was made of sea floor that floated above the water in a land of pure light. Light so bright it could burn and blind. Land that was covered by a bubble so big that you could not see the edges of it. It was warm there without the vents and all the resources one would need were just scattered about waiting to be picked up instead of carefully harvested. In the time before the ocean rise, Atlantis was in this beautiful world. It’s a lovely children’s story meant to spark the imagination, but not real. I’ve always known that. The world is covered in water and to go to high in the water is to risk certain death. There isn’t enough pressure up there to keep your body together. Plus it’s cold away from the thermal vents. I’ve heard stories from those that have gone to the very edge of what we can survive that say it is brighter up there but I suspect that is just their brain suffering from too little pressure. Personally I prefer the lovely glow of the
Bryan threw the door open, stepped into the room, and tossed his case onto the desk. The action making a loud reverb through the room. The other man jumped, falling out of his chair for a moment. Bryan didn’t wait for him to recover. “A deal’s a deal. I got your stupid marbles now where’s my payment.” There was no amount of question in his tone. He scowled and began tapping his foot. The other man, Edward, regained his composure while Bryan started tapping away on the tile floor. He cleared his throat and pulled the case over, flipping it open to inspect the contents. Within were a dozen orbs the size of marbles; what differentiated them from normal toys however, was the fact that they were all made of a different gemstone. If it weren’t for the plush padding of the case, throwing them onto the table might have cracked one. Edward nodded and closed them up. “We will get to your payment. But first, questions.” Bryan continued tapping his foot, crossed his arms, and stared at Edward
So this week for Flash Fiction Month Sidequest, Hydra is offering a chance to consider our habits as writers: panster or planner? Turns out I’m totally chaotic and I can’t identify any logic to my process. Sometimes I can’t start without having the entire world building process done; others I just write and see how the world comes together. Sometimes, I have the characters’ arcs defined from start to finish and I write around it, other times I know where they’re supposed to end but the arc evolves… And I can’t even claim it depends on the type of stories either because sometimes I write fantasy in stream of consciousness and other times I plan the heck out of it before I put pen to paper. Yes except for FFM, I tend to write first and type later; that way I can edit which I try not to do too much of for this event. So completely chaotic process… though I have been told that since I see the maps of my stories in my head, chances are I’m mostly a planner. Anyway, it’s been interesting
